La Pinacoteca de Brera, abierta al público desde el 1809, recoge obras maestras del arte italiano y extranjero desde el siglo XIII hasta el siglo XX, exhibidas en el piso noble del mismo palacio, donde también tiene su sede la Academia de Bellas Artes.
El edificio, de estilo tardo barroco, se edificó sobre las ruinas de un antiguo convento del siglo XIV de la orden de los Humillados, y desde la segunda mitad del setecientos acoge a la Academia, por voluntad de la emperatriz Maria Teresa de Austria.
El museo nace gracias al deseo de Napoleón Bonaparte como suma de obras ejemplares para la formación de los estudiantes, el cual acogería obras maestras de la pintura italiana, procedentes de iglesias y conventos suprimidos durante los años en los que Milán fue capital del reino italiano.
A diferencia de los grandes museos nacionales, Brera no nace de una colección privada de reyes y familias nobles, sino como iniciativa política del Estado. Las colecciones se enriquecieron durante años fruto de intercambios, compras y donaciones.
Las obras maestras del novecientos se han incorporado gracias a los legados Jesi y Vitali.
