The Odalisque

Francesco Hayez

Odalisques in the 19th century, segregated in harems and thus inaccessible, were an object of erotic fancy and a popular subject in Europe- an art. The Orient and its culture were known chiefly through rare travellers’ accounts at this time. In addressing his theme, Hayez combined the academic nude and nudes studied from life with the examples of Raphael and Titian, while for his oriental costumes he turned to reproductions of 16th century Venetian engravings.
