Triste presentimento

Girolamo Induno

As many other paintings by this artist, the work belongs to the series of genre paintings whose subjects directly refer to the Risorgimento. The artist interprets it through the life of humble people. The painting shows accuracy in the details of the furniture, which is full of references to contemporary events of the artist: there is a homage to Hayez’s Kiss hung on the wall at the end of the room, a bust by Garibaldi in a niche, and the illustrated page of a magazine hung on the window.
Girolamo Induno made a reproduction of this painting in 1871, entitled La fidanzata del garibaldino (The garibaldino’s fiancée), modifying the lady’s face and the details of the furniture.
