The innovative solutions developed by Venetian painting in the 16th century had an impact on all the areas on “dry land” under the city’s control, albeit in constant interaction with the different local styles. In this altarpiece for a church in Crema, Paris Bordon, a native of Treviso, devised a solemn, classicising architectural setting lit by warm patches of light. Within it, the figures’ sober poses are emphasised by their gleaming attire, testifying to Bordon’s undeniably up-to-date yet far from revolutionary style.
