This rubicund Virgin, her chemise displaying typical embroidery, is a fragment from a panel painting known from copies. The copies allow us to understand the gesture of the Christ Child who was leaning out toward a goldfinch, a symbol of his Passion. It was the central panel in a polyptych in the Avogadro di Collobiano Chapel in Sant’Eusebio in Vercelli. Gaudenzio appears to be au fait with such works of Bramantino as the “Soli Deo” Madonna, yet he translates them into a soft style, adopting a palette that draws the observer into the picture.
