Two dishevelled angels hold back the curtains of a canopy to reveal the Sacro Monte di Varallo as it was at the time, with the complexes of Nazareth and Bethlehem and the Chapel of Calvary. In front of it, saints and an as yet unidentified donor in the habit of a Canon Regular of the Lateran flock around the Virgin. Gerolamo Giovenone, from a family of artists, drew close to Gaudenzio Ferrari around 1515 and went on to exchange drawings and models with him.
