We know relatively little about Bramantino, the most talented Lombard artist of his day, and controversy rages over his work. He showed an original approach to religious subjects. Here, for instance, he combines a Holy Family with a Rest on the Flight into Egypt. Jesus, St. Joseph and Mary, sporting a large pink turban, rest in the foreground, while in the background they move on, with Jesus taming (invisible) dragons as narrated in the Apocrypha. The figures on the opposite side may be the Three Wise Men.
