The Scorn of Cam

Bernardino Luini

In Genesis we read how, after the Flood, Noah grew grapes, got drunk on wine and fell asleep naked. His sons Shem and Japheth cover him without looking at his nakedness while Cam scorns him, thus condemning his descendants to slavery. Against a shining landscape (hinting at the intensity of the colours in the frescoed rooms), the Ark has run aground on the mountain top. The episode in the Bible presages Christ’s Passion and the Eucharist.
