Longhi conjures up the rituals and society occasions of Venice’s well-heeled families with ironic realism, yet devoid of either moral judgment or celebratory intent. His approach is paralleled in the comedies of the playwright Carlo Goldoni, his contemporary, who calls Longhi’s art his “sister muse”.
