The canvas comes from the former church of Santi Cosma e Damiano in Milan. Signed and dated bottom centre, this austere painting with its dominant tones of ivory and grey is clearly inspired by FrenchClassicism, a contention borne out by the solemnity of the sober composition, the calm gestures and the monumentality of the figures. Moving to Rome in 1728 after winning the prix de Rome, Subleyras was hugely successful and won major commissions also in his capacity as a portrait artist.
