Count Pallavicino Trivulzio, a collector and patriot, commissioned this picture as a companion piece to Pietro Rossi and chose thesubject, the first time any Italian painting had celebrated the life of the celebrated navigator. The painting was also shown at the Brera with a lengthy explanatory title: Christopher Colombus who, as he prepares to board his ship in the port of Palos and set out on his first journey of discovery, embraces his two sons and commends them to his protector Father Giovanni Perez.
