Schubert’s Winterreise for voice and piano is one of a handful of universal monuments of Western culture. This journey is, however, one that all can relate to; an unrequited love, the despair and turmoil, the doubt and self-searching that comes with abandoning love and hope. The cycle of songs forms a journey but one more psychological than a story in itself. As the cycle develops, the journey moves from the immediate reaction to lost love and despair to another level entirely, one that explores the psychology of the protagonist in relation to the nature around him and to that of mankind itself. Possibly no other music has ever touched the human soul to the extent of Winterreise.
Schubert died at 31 years of age whilst correcting the final drafts for publication. It was his final task. He had written more than 600 songs in his lifetime but said of Winterreise “I like them all more than any of my other songs, and the day will come when you will like them too”.

The cycle will be performed in an unexpected form that is part of a larger project exploring how music communicates thoughts and ideas, the voice and hence the words have been removed with the vocal line played by the cello. The audience will however have access to the original texts of Wilhelm Müller’s poetry also in translation.
We are taught to avoid the use of the word “unique”, but this song cycle is truly “unique”. It may represent the pinnacle of the art of song writing but its universality and understanding of the human soul makes it totally accessible to all.
