Christ Carrying the Cross

Francesco Zaganelli

Francesco Zaganelli worked primarily in the Romagna region, but he was open to all kinds of experimentation. In this picture intended for private worship, details such as the nature of the landscape, the full and clear-cut folds in Christ’s tunic and the intense pathos in his face, or the soft and highly controlled brushwork reveal his interest in Flemish painting, and in the work of Albrecht Dürer in particular.
