Vase with a Classical Scene

Manifattura di Volterra

This pair of monumental vases once graced the Palazzo Reale in Milan. The central band on each one carries a scene from Classical mythology. On this vase we can identify the Sacrifice of Polyxena. The young girl in the centre was slain by Achilles’ son Neoptolemus, seeking to avenge his father whose death had been caused by his love for Polyxena. On the left a priest and a young man celebrate a sacrifice, while on the right a handmaid consoles Polyxena’s mother Hecuba.
