The work was donated to the Pinacoteca in 1951 by Paolo Stramezzi, a well-known Lombard collector of Italian 19th-century art. At the time it was attributed to the painter Raffaello Sernesi, widely represented in the Stramezzi collection, and bore the title of Patriots at the Shooting Gallery. The subject of the picture has recently been identified as the national shooting match inaugurated at the Cascine in Florence in June 1865, and the author of the work as the less famous Giovanni Estienne, hitherto known only for his portraits and still lifes.
