Self-Portrait at the Age of Fifty-Seven

Francesco Hayez

The work is the artist’s self-portrait when he was 57. It was donated by Angiolina Rossi Hayez to the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera in 1883. The painting is inspired by Palma il Giovane’s self-portrait, held in the Pinacoteca. This work, as well as all Venetian art, served as inspiration for Hayez due to his Venetian origins.
The painting remained in the artist’s studio until his death. Together with other works by Hayez, this self-portrait was sent to the Universal Exposition in Paris, which confirmed his fame.
