The painting, together with its companion piece St. Jerome, may come from the church of the Gesù in Pavia, its rectangular format suggesting that the two pictures once hung on the side walls of a chapel (or on pilasters), which would explain why the guides of the period overlook them. The figure of Cecilia bears a strong resemblance to Rufina in the “painting by three artists” also on display in this room.
