Truth and mysticism: in keeping with the precepts of the Counter-Refomation which demanded easily understandable images, the artist has simplified his composition, focusing on the figure of St. Francis and setting the celebrated episode in a fertile landscape rendered almost dreamlike by touches of phosphorescent light, the artist’s way of underscoring the intensity of the moment in which the saint in ecstasy has identified so completely with Christ that he receives the marks of the crucifixion on his own flesh, as we can see from his hands.
