The incomplete date on the parapet should probably read MDXV while the entwined letters EC are apocryphal. The picture, previously given to artists working in Lombardy and the Veneto such as Savoldo, Titian or Cariani, appears in fact to be closely linked to Titian’s early portraits. X-ray examination has revealed two earlier versions beneath the present painted surface: a (vertical) portrait of a man and a previous (horizontal) dual portrait.
