Portrait of a Man

Francesco Torbido named Moro

A pupil of Giorgione in Venice and then of Liberale in Verona, where he moved in c. 1499–1500, this painter was a firm favourite with his contemporaries as a portrait artist, but unfortunately only a handful of his paintings have survived. The presence of the signature “FRS.TVRBIDVS.V.
FACIEBAT.” is thus of the utmost importance for the study of his artistic output. In this picture Il Moro reveals his debt to Giorgione in the way the figure emerges from the greenish background.
