Portrait of Wenzel Anton, Prince of Kaunitz-Rietberg

Giovanni Battista Lampi

Brera’s history begins with the last painting to enter the collection. The Prince of Kaunitz and Chancellor of the Austrian Empire was a man of culture, as we can see from the presence of Minerva, the goddess of wisdom to whom he is pointing, and from the Classical setting in this study for a large portrait for the Academy in Vienna. Kaunitz and the Empress Maria Theresa established a multiudisciplinary school in brera in 1773, in which artistic education played a major role.
