This picture, which can be dated c. 1560 on account of the artist’s use of a broader colour range than he affected in his youth, has been attributed to a mature phase in Moroni’s career. Its unusual oval format is used in engravings, sculpture and particularly cameos, which the neutral ground also seems to evoke. The skill of the artist, known primarily for his portraits, emerges in full in his painterly treatment, achieved with minute variations in colour and the use of light.
