Portrait of Benedetta Carminati Chisoli

Piccio (Giovanni Carnovali)

In the 1930s a need was felt to show Italian 19th century painting had works equal to the old masters. The large historical paintings were loaned and replaced by works such as this portrait with its disregard for academic convention. Donated by the Friends of Brera, set up to support the museum in 1926, it uses loose brushwork to portray the jovial sitter in a pale blue setting. It remained an isolated case, however, and the goal of establishing a comprehensive overview of the 19th century was never achieved.
