This is the largest painting in Brera and the largest public work ever painted by Savoldo, who has imbued it with the realism proper to the Lombard tradition, with the influence of Lotto and of Leonardo, and with the painterly technique of Venetian art. The Virgin sits in heaven amid dark clouds alive with Cherubim and Seraphim, while two angels play a lute and a shawm copied from life. The landscape below the divine apparition is a view of the Fondamenta Nuove in Venice.
