The pale palette with unusual notes such as the yellow and wisteria of Jesus’ clothing, the convincing simplicity of the composition opening out onto a sweeping landscape and the fine features of the monk make this small panel a minor masterpiece. Intended for a monk’s cell as we can see from its size and from the intensity of the figures’ expressions, it may come from the Certosa di Pavia where Bergognone worked for a long time.
