In this youthful work by Cima, the Virgin and saints are accompanied by the patrons, portrayed as tiny figures in accordance with medieval usage where one’s size mirrored one’s rank in the pecking order. Some of the figures wear the white hood and habit of the Flagellants. The single scene is hosted under an open canopy allowing the artist to depict the natural world and to convey the light effects achieved by different hues, a ploy of which Venetian painters were especially fond.
