This picture was painted at the peak of the artist’s success at the Gonzaga court in Mantua. His success was due largely to the harmony and balance of his compositions immersed in sweeping landscapes dominated by monumental buildings, to the calm simplicity of his figures’ gestures and expressions and to the smooth transparency of his palette. In this instance the large altarpiece is a tribute to the painting of Perugino.
