These panels are from a polyptych in the church of San Francesco in Casale Monferrato. The saints, elegant in their gold-trimmed attire, pose serenely on a coloured marble floor, on which St. Catherine’s wheel has the semblance of a perspective inlay. Meticulously depicted luxury, humanity and a sense of space show that Spanzotti, who worked with Francesco del Cossa in Bologna as a young man, looked to Flemish and Burgundian painting but also to the work of Foppa, Zenale and Bramantino in Milan.
