This painting was originally the upper part of a panel depicting The Penitent St. Jerome now in the National Gallery in London. Though only a tiny fragment, it still manages to give us an accurate glimpse of the artist’s highly original style, thanks to the liveliness of the draughtsmanship which is particularly vivid in the thin, luminous silhouettes outlining and modelling the figure, and in the restless tension breathing life into his face.
