Raised in a family of painters – his father painted portraits, a speciality for Lombard artists – Legnani is known to have lived in Bologna, where he probably studied under Carlo Cignani, from 1683 to 1686. A historical painter who worked in Lombardy, Piedmont under the House of Savoy and the Republic of Genoa, Legnani here turns his back on the realism typical of Lombard art, producing a carefully crafted painting in the international taste.
