91 OBIETTIVI PER IL 2017 / LOOKING TO 2017 2017 is a year of consolidation and preparation. Consolidation of the initiatives begun in 2016 – the re-installation of the permanent collection, the development of new ways to reach new publics, the continuation of cultural programmes that had proven their appeal in the preceding year. Preparation for the transfer of the museum’s collections of Modern art to the Palazzo Citterio and the completion of the re-installation of the museum’s entire permanent collection, thus finally bring to fruition the vision of the “Grande Brera” spelled out by Franco Russoli in the years prior to his premature death in 1977. The current project to transform the museum is based on the mission announced in January 2016, and will include the renovation of the museum’s shop and it is hoped the opening of a new museum caffè, named after Fernanda Wittgens. The project is also rooted in the values already espoused by three former directors of the Brera beginning in the early decades of the twentieth century – Ettore Modigliani, Fernanda Wittgens and Franco Russoli. None of them saw the museum as primarily a tourist attraction – they saw the museum as a fundamental part of our identity as citizens of a free, democratic and open society. Ettore Modigliani (d. 1947) led the museum through the difficult years of the First World War and the rise of Italian fascism, until he lost his position in 1934 and was forced into exile because he was a Jew. Fernanda Wittgens (d. 1957), herself imprisoned for helping Jews escape the Nazis, rebuilt the museum after the war, filled it with flowers and organised the first fashion shows inside the museum – the expression Il 2017 sarà un anno di consolidamento e preparazione. Fernanda Wittgens,
