LABELS Captions are one of the tools with which a museum medi- ates its collection for its visitors. To tie in with the renovation of the rooms’ layout, the Pinacoteca devoted a great deal ofattentiontoitsnewcaptions,devisinganexplanatoryap- paratus that allowsvisitors to observe theworks ofart from three different viewpoints. Scholarly captions are the primary toolforunderstanding a workofart.Writtenbyarthistorians, theycontainabrieftext with the most important information regarding the work’s historical context, its meaning and its collecting history. Accompanied by tags with the title of the painting and its date together with the painter’s name and his or her dates of birth and death, they provide the minimum amount of sound knowledge required to enjoy the work. The scholarly captions sit side by side with what we have called captions “for families” or mixed-generation groups, devised by the Pinacoteca’s Education Services to stimu- late a debate on the works being observed and to draw attention to particular aspects of it: its subject matter, the materials used to produce it, its history or its composition. The third type of caption is what we call “master captions”, written by figures of international renown from the world of culture, offering visitors a fresh take on the work of art dic- tated by these masters’ own personal vision and sensitivity and by their different areas of individual interest.
