The picture is a companion piece to the View of St. Mark’s Basin from the Punta della Dogana, on show in the same room. The view was certainly one of the artist’s favorites, and he produced many slightly different versions of it, such as the one in the Museo Thyssen- Bornemisza in Madrid (prior to 1720), the one in the Gemäldegalerie in Dresden (after 1723) and the beautiful veduta painted on copper now in the collection of the earl of Leicester at Holkham Hall, in Norfolk (circa 1727).
But the true prototype of the canvas in Brera, particularly where the framing of the view is concerned, seems to be a painting once owned by Sir Robert Grenville Harvey and today in a Milanese private collection.
