The artist chose the iconographic theme of the studies on display here (preparatory studies for two of the twelve paintings for the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Bergamo) from a broad range of biblical topics suggested by the Abbot Giovan Battista Mazzoleni di Calusco, all of them connected with the celebration of Mary to whom the basilica is dedicated. In this cycle Malinconico reveals both his debt to his master Luca Giordano and an interest in the art of Francesco Solimena.
