On establishing the Republic, Napoleon appointed Appiani Fine Arts Commissioner in 1800, charging him to select confiscated pictures for the museums of Milan and Bologna, and premier peintre in 1805. In the Palazzo Reale Appiani painted The Apotheosis of Napoleon on the vault of the Throne Room and devised a series of canvases for the sovereign’s cabinet with Stories of Jupiter, including this overdoor which the artist kept in his studio after it was decided to execute the cycle in monochrome fresco.
