Franchi (Carrara 1731–Milan 1806), who trained in Rome to restore and replicate Classical statues, was appointed professor of sculpture at Brera in 1776. He produced much sculptural decoration for the leading palazzi in Neoclassical Milan, often working alongside Knoller who was employed as a fresco painter. This portrait showing Franchi holding a marble head of Homer was donated by his heirs to Brera’s “Cabinet of Painters’ Portraits.”
