The inscription “CUM BERGOMI PRAETURAM SUSTINERET M.D.LXV” allows us to identify the sitter as Antonio Navagero, the Podestà of Bergamo in 1565, who wished to celebrate his appointment, and thus his growing social status, by having his portrait painted. The almost full-figure pose derived from Titian’s “state portraits” imparts an official aura to the picture corroborated by the sumptuous attire undescoring Navagero’s role, but at the same time the sharp psychological penetration and spontanous pose lend it something of a private air.
