Boltraffio painted one of his most famous pictures, an altarpiece for poet Gerolamo Casio’s family chapel, in Bologna in 1500. The portrait, which belongs to this phase, is influenced by the painting of Perugino and of Venice as we can see from the sitter’s position just off centre and the clear palette. By analogy with the Bologna painting, the sitter was identified as Casio himself at an unspecified time in history and a laurel wreath and scroll containing his poems were added to it.
