This is a reconstructed polittico, intended to stand on an altar, with various compartments. During the 15th century, the polittico gradually lost ground.First in Florence and then elsewhere the single square panel became fashionable. Andrea di Bartolo was a prolific Siennese painter whose polittico shows the coronation of the Virgin with Saints Catherine, Paul, Peter, and probably Augustine; it comes from the convent of  Santa Caterina d’Alessandria in Sant’Angelo in Vado and in 1811 Pinacoteca acquired it as work of an anonymous greek painter. Bernard Berenson attributed the polyptych to Andrea di Bartolo.
