Various frescoes with mythological subjects adorning another room in the Pelucca were detached in fragments, making them difficult to interpret. This scene may be part of the story of Diana and Callisto as recounted in Ovid’s Metamorphoses and Fasti. Bathers in a wooded landscape are a recurrent theme in the 16th century, though their meaning is not always clear. The natural setting harks back to Classical sources and to the precepts of Leon Battista Alberti.
