Andrea Solario painted the Madonna of the Carnations at the start of his career when he was in Venice with his brother Cristoforo, a sculptor, in the early 1490s. The Christ Child’s posture is inspired by Leonardo, while the style is influenced by the painters Andrea met in Venice: Giovanni Bellini, Alvise Vivarini, Perugino, Antonello da Messina and Albrecht Dürer. The shadow in the room contrasts with the luminous landscape, where a shepherd plays the flute and a horseman rides past in the distance.
