This painting comes from a Franciscan church, shown by the predominance of saints of that order in it. Its division into sections is archaic but the figurative style is that of an artist familiar with the innovations of the Renaissance. Naturalistic details as the foreshortened foot of St. Francis, the hands marked by tendons and veins, the miniature figures adorning St. Louis’ cope and the scroll in his hands are all designed to impart a more lifelike and moving quality to the whole.
