Though he died young, Camillo Boccaccino had a major influence on painting in Cremona. In a landscape defined by glowing chiaroscuro, the saints turn to the Virgin with theatrical gesture, their features lost in admiration or enrapt merely accentuating the intensity of the scene. The result is that the artist’s numerous state-of-the-art references, such as Raphael’s mature work, Dosso Dossi’s intense palette or Pordenone’s tortured anatomies, take second place to the reality of the sentiments depicted.
