Romanino painted this youthful work on returning to Brescia after travelling to Venice and Padua to study Titian’s mastery of colour and to familiarise with Venetian art and the work of Lorenzo Lotto, but also with northern European painting as revealed by the drapery’s sharp folds.
The humanity pervading the scene, with the Virgin gently holding back the restless Christ Child on a rich cushion covered by a white cloth, is a typical feature of Romanino’s style.
