Francesco Galli, of Neapolitan origin, was one of Leonardo’s earliest and most direct disciples in Milan, the figure of the Christ Child and Mary’s hands closely echoing the master’s style. The artist pays close attention to the passage of light and shade and to reflections. The figures, their flesh pearly, are swathed in the shadow of a domestic interior. Behind them, a window opens onto a landscape with a lake shimmering in the light.
