This work, heavily influenced by Venetian art, marks a moment of reflection in the painter’s career on Giorgione and in particular on Titian, as suggested by the intensity of his palette. Treading in the Venetian painters’footsteps, he affords special importance to the landscape, which is as much a feature of the composition as the figures. In the intimate family mood of the scene, one’s eye is drawn to the splendid portrait of the spellbound donor.
