This painting by Albani – who often builds rustic idylls into his work – is emblematic for its mythical subject matter and for its ideal landscape influenced by the Carracci reform. Formerly in the Sampieri collection, the Dance combines iconographies such as the Rape of Proserpina, Venus and Cupid and the temple of Vesta, all dedicated to the Triumph of Love and thus appropriate as a wedding gift. The lilies on the frame may point to a link with the Farnese family.
