The Napoleonic Halls showcase large 15th and 16th century paintings from the Veneto and Lombardy. Environmental conditions in Venice were such that large canvases were preferred to fresco cycles, and this eventually set a trend that spread eslewhere. The Crucifixion, painted to hang in the monk’s refectory of San Giorgio in Braida a Verona, is set on a kind of stage framed by pillars bearing the patron’s crest. The background depicts the hills around Verona rather than Jerusalem.
