Gabriel, Raphael and Michael, who defeats Satan in the Apocalypse, are the princes of the angelic hierarchy. The warrior archangel recurs in the visions of Arcangela Panigarola, prior of the Augustinian monastery of Santa Marta where the altarpiece originally hung, and his struggle against the demon who ends up upside-down in the chasm of hell alludes to God’s inevitable victory. The faces, landscape and meticulous depiction of plant life are influenced by Leonardo, under whom Marco d’Oggiono studied.
