Leonardo was a figure who also fascinated artists from other countries. He worked on the lost Battle of Anghiari in 1505 with a “Ferrando spagnolo”, identified either as Yañez or Llanos who share a similar style. One of the two painted this work in which the Virgin and Christ Child embracing a lamb, symbolising sacrifice, echo Leonardo’s studies for a Madonna of the Cat. If we look closely, we can tell that a cat once stood in the lamb’s place.
